Pro’s and Con’s of Being a Bartender.
So you’ve decided you want to become a bartender! Well one thing you will make is money! Tips are an amazing thing to receive for your personality and hard work. Here is our break down of pros and cons of being a bartender.
Pros
One word lucrative. You will make money in tips everyday. Cash tips you get to bring home with you after each shift. It’s great! Depending on the establishment you work for, your tips could range anywhere from $200-$1000 per shift!
You will get to have fun at work! Some days it might not even feel like work, and it will feel more like you are somewhere hanging out. Some bars you even get to take a shot or two if a customer buys it for you.
You meet a lot of amazing people. Take this as an opportunity to network. They say your net worth is your network. You can meet people that you simply like to talk to. You might find an opportunity to make money on the side if they want to hire you for an event, such as a wedding or birthday party. You might become friends for example with a mechanic who can offer you a discount at the auto shop they work at, or hey if you are single you may even meet the love of your life! You will meet people everyday, you never know where a conversation can lead you.
Cons
If you thought bartending equaled standing somewhere, looking pretty, and never getting your hands dirty, this job is not for you. About 80% of bars that you work at, will serve food. So keep in mind that yes, your main function will be to make drinks, but you may also be taking food orders and be responsible for getting additional condiments such as ketchup or steak sauce for your customers.
It is very likely that you will work long shifts, nights, weekends, and major holidays. Having worked at several different venues in my career, one thing I can tell you is at majority of them, I worked 10-12 hour shifts 6 days a week! You will be compensated nicely, but it can be exhausting. Be prepared to work long shifts, and all major holidays if you are a bartender.
Lastly our final con is standing on your feet all day, not being able to take a traditional lunch break, and not being able to use the restroom anytime you want. You will have very busy and crazy time periods behind that bar, where you won’t get a chance to leave, until the crowd dies down. When the rush is over, and all your customers are content, now is the time for you to take that much needed restroom break. When you start to feel overwhelmed, remember how much money you are bringing in, and ask yourself, how many jobs can you have, that can allow you to bring home cash tips every night after your shift?
With that being said, we would say the pros out weight the cons! Happy bartending.
